- NATURE IN THE GLASS ‘Fine Summer Breeze’ AJ Vol. 336
Aqua Journal Vol. 336 [Fine Summer Breeze] Where balance is important in a layout, for instance when arranging a composition or planting, it is good to be aware of the golden ratio. In this layout, Nature Aquarium’s classic 2:3 ratio of empty spaces in the left and right is used, with Branch Wood and a variety of stemmed plants drawing the eye into the orthodox concave layout. I feel this piece returns to the unchanging aesthetic of Nature Aquarium that Takashi Amano established through his works. DATA Photo taken on: March 28th, 2018 (ADA) Creator: Yusuke Homma (layout production, text) Aquarium: Cube Garden W90×D45×H45(cm) Lighting: Solar RGB x 1 (8.5 hours per day) Filtration: Super Jet Filter ES-600 (Bio Rio) Materials: Branch Wood, Manten Stone Substrate: Aqua Soil – Amazonia, Power Sand Advance M, Bacter 100, Clear Super, Tourmaline BC, Laplata Snad CO2: CO2 Pollen Glass Large30Ø , 4 bubbles per second via CO2 Beetle Counter (using Tower) Aeration:15.5 hours after the light is turned off with Lily Pipe P-4 Additives Brighty K, Green Brighty Mineral, Green Brighty Iron, Green Brighty Nitrogen Water change: 1/2 once a week Water quality: Temperature 25°C, pH: 6.2, TH: 50 mg/L Plants Hygrophila pinnatifida Rotala rotundifolia ‘Green’ Rotala rotundifolia ‘Ceylon’* Rotala rotundifolia ‘Hra’* Rotala nanjean Hygrophila polysperma Myriophyllum mattogrossense* Ludwigia glandulosa Pogostemon sp. ‘Dassen’ Anubias barteri var. nana ‘Petite’* Microsorum sp. ‘Trident’ Taxiphyllum barbieri* *means that they are from ADA’s living product lineups. Fish Hyphessobrycon rosaceus var. Boehlkea fredcochui Hyphessobrycon amandae Crossocheilus oblongus Otocinclus sp. Caridina multidentata Stemmed plant concave layout A wide sized tank lends itself to concave layouts constructed with plant clusters on the left and right sides. In this W900 tank, Branch Wood is used as it is easy to construct with and offers enough space to raise stemmed-plants. The left of the composition is the 2 and the right the 3 in the 2:3 ratio of the classic concave layout. Bright ferns planted into driftwood branches and the use of various hues of stemmed-plants between the midground and background come together to make a vivid overall impression. Point A Leaf type gradient to add depth Centrally planted red-leaved plants can add accent and give a sense of stability; here large-leaved Ludwigia glandulosa is planted in front of a fine-leaved Rotala rotundifolia ‘Hra’ to create depth. The fun of using red aquatic plants is that, even with the same red, the difference in shade can change their impression. Point B Making use of driftwood movement in epithytic plant placement Use driftwood’s unique branching: whilst a central arch is a composition point, adding a little Taxiphyllum barbieri, sparsely so as to still expose the bark, can add balance. Distribution of epiphytic aquatic plants, for instance Microsorum sp. ‘Trident’, at the driftwood’s root can bring brightness and a sense of unity. Point C Beautifying aquascape with an Aqua Screen and decorative sand Used to intensify the outline of the aquatic plants, a normal-type black Aqua Screen gives the red stemmed-plants’s colouring a stronger impressionability. With the spread of decorative sand in the foreground and open areas a visual height difference is created, as well as adding more brightness. Spread sand makes a central path, with stones placed so as to lead to the back; this emphasizes the sense of depth.
- Exploring the Clarity and Effectiveness of ADA NA Carbon for Aquariums
Aquarium enthusiasts often encounter the challenge of maintaining crystal-clear water in their tanks, especially when dealing with turbidity issues. Turbidity, or the cloudiness of water, can detract from the aesthetic appeal of an aquarium and potentially harm its inhabitants by hindering light penetration and reducing oxygen levels. While pinpointing the root cause of turbidity is essential, immediate solutions like water changes or the use of activated carbon can help restore the aquarium's water to its pristine state. ADA NA Carbon emerges as a high-performance activated carbon solution designed to tackle such challenges head-on. Unlike traditional activated carbon, NA Carbon boasts an exceptional absorption capability, reportedly about 20 times higher than conventional activated carbon products used in aquariums. This heightened efficiency is attributed to its unique cylindrical shape, which not only promotes effective absorption activity but also significantly reduces the yellowing of aquarium water, ensuring a fresh and clear appearance. One of the remarkable features of NA Carbon is its acid treatment process. This special treatment ensures that the pH of the aquarium water remains neutral, alleviating concerns that the water might become alkaline—a common issue with some activated carbon products due to the potassium produced during their manufacture. The product is conveniently packed in a net for easy rinsing and immediate emergency use, highlighting its user-friendly design suitable even for beginners. The cylindrical granules of NA Carbon, with a diameter of approximately 4mm, may appear small but are densely molded to provide high-quality adsorption performance. A cross-sectional view of these granules reveals extremely small, mesh-like spaces known as pores. These pores endow NA Carbon with a vast specific surface area of about 1000 m² per gram, enabling it to target and rapidly clear turbidity in aquarium water, including yellowish, cloudy, and green water conditions. ADA NA Carbon stands out for its advanced solution in aquarium water purification. Its superior absorption rate and unique design not only make it highly effective in combating water discoloration and turbidity but also ensure it does not alter the water's natural pH balance. This makes NA Carbon an invaluable asset for both novice and experienced aquarium hobbyists seeking to maintain optimal water clarity and quality in their aquatic environments.
- The Overwintering Marvel of Tropical Aquatic Plants
In the heart of Japan, a surprising phenomenon unfolds each year as certain tropical aquatic plants and perennials brave the cold to overwinter, challenging the usual survival dynamics within their ecosystems. This remarkable ability not only highlights the resilience of these species but also raises questions about the delicate balance of plant competition and ecosystem health. The Overwintering Phenomenon Among the lush greenery, plants like Myriophyllum aquaticum, a notable invasive species, demonstrate an extraordinary capability to overwinter despite their tropical origins. This adaptation allows them to gain a significant head start over annual plants sprouting from seeds in spring. With the melting snow raising water levels and increasing temperatures and daylight, the stage is set for a dramatic awakening of nature. A Competitive Edge The real intrigue lies in the competitive edge these overwintering plants possess. Root systems developed from the previous year enable these plants to absorb nutrients more efficiently and grow larger at an earlier stage compared to their annual counterparts. This advantage allows them to cover water and ground surfaces rapidly, overshadowing seedlings and depriving them of the vital light needed for germination. Ecosystem Impacts The dominance of perennials and cold-tolerant species can lead to a significant shift in the ecological balance. As these plants expand their territories, they can inhibit the growth of annual plants, leading to a decrease in biodiversity. In Japan, this competition has been observed to cause the disappearance of native annual plants, altering the natural competition cycle and potentially disturbing the ecosystem balance. The Role of Indigenous and Invasive Species The presence of indigenous species like Polygonum thunbergii, which blooms beautifully in the fall, contrasts sharply with the aggressive spread of invasive species like Myriophyllum aquaticum. The latter's ability to form vast colonies poses a challenge not only to annual plants but also to the overall diversity and health of aquatic ecosystems. The Mission of Team Green Manners Understanding the impacts of non-native species on local ecosystems is crucial. Team Green Manners is dedicated to educating the public about the importance of preserving natural beauty and maintaining ecological balance. Their mission emphasizes the need to prevent the spread of invasive species into natural environments, highlighting the importance of being mindful of environmental impacts. Key Takeaways The resilience of certain tropical aquatic plants to overwinter in colder climates showcases the complexity of natural ecosystems and the intricate balance of species competition. The spread of invasive species further complicates this balance, threatening biodiversity and ecosystem health. Through education and awareness, initiatives like Team Green Manners play a vital role in preserving our natural heritage for future generations, reminding us of the delicate interplay between all living things and their environments.

- New Bio Rio G
New biological filter media, Bio Rio G has been released from ADA Nature Aquarium. Bio Rio G is a sintered glass filter media suitable for biological filtration. Because it is porous and its surface area is quite big, many filtration microorganisms settle and demonstrate high filtration performance. The pieces are irregular, and when a filtration tank is filled with them, gaps tend to be formed. So they hardly cause clogging. Because it is unlikely to impact water conditions such as pH and hardness of water, a long term stable filtration can be achieved. Please utilize it as replacement filter media for external filters such as Super Jet Filter series in combination with NA Carbon.
